Our Safer Internet Helpline aims to provide the public, children and teenagers of Cyprus with the means to talk anonymously to a professional who may support them psychologically when dealing with complex Internet risks while also assisting in the report of illegal web-pages, activities, and also technical and software issues, or even advice on which websites to avoid.
The need for Safer Internet Helpline in Cyprus was highlighted by the European Commission's report that due to the wide use of Internet technologies and the lack of adequate monitoring and legislative processes, children may place themselves in a high risk situation when encountering dangerous or illicit content and may experience fear, intimidation and bullying.
The Safer Internet Helpline has been the result of the collective efforts of the
Cyprus Neuroscience & Technology Institute (CNTI) and the Pancyprian Coordinating Committee for the Protection and Welfare of Children (PCCPWC). The launch of the Safer Internet Helpline took place in January 2009. Training sessions, which took place between the 22nd and 24th of January and on the 4th and 8th of April prepared the first personnel for their tasks.
The CNTI launched an Awareness Node for Safer Internet in 2006 and a Hotline in 2007. Since 01/09/2008, the CNTI is coordinating the operation of a combined Node which includes an Awareness Node, a Hotline, and a Helpline.
